China’s steel scrap consumption jumps 18% in Jan-Sept’21

  • China’s steel scrap consumption climbed 18% to 183.17 mnt in the first nine months of 2021 (Jan-Sept’21) as against 155.2 mnt in the same period in 2020, as per data released by Bureau of International Recycling (BIR).
  • This increase reflects in part the goal of higher steel scrap usage announced in China’s latest Five-Year Plan so as to reduce CO2 emissions from crude steel production.
