Indian DRI Manufacturers prefer South African Lumps over Australian

Imports of Iron ore to India are rising owing to mining restrictions and falling production in domestic market. Indian steel & DRI makers will be importing over 1 MnT till July, 2014 (in FY15).

Speaking DRI makers who are importing or willing to import have mentioned that South African Lumps are preferred over Australian lumps for better tumbler index (specification which identifies the hardness of ore). India is largest DRI manufacturer in the world with an annual production of about 24 MnT.

South African Lumps are of better tumbler than Australian ore. In African ore, we are expecting a tumbler index of 92%, whereas Australian ore will range somewhere between 84-86%, Fe content being the same, “said a DRI manufacturer based in eastern region, who has received offers for South African ore.

On similar lines, manufacturers based in West region mentioned that if they have to go for imports of lumps ore, they will prefer South African ore.
