India: Alang scrap ship imports fall by 45%, m-o-m, in Jan’22

A total of 13 vessels with combined light displacement tonnage (LDT) of 61,391 were received at Alang for recycling in Jan’22, down 45% compared with 111,167 LDT in Dec. SteelMint data shows that 220 ships were beached at Alang for demolition during Jan’21-Jan’22. Surging Covid-19 cases in the subcontinent have restricted trades as owners are retiring old vessels for cash.
