India: Odisha submits Status Report on 186 Mines to CEC

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has submitted detailed status report on 186 mines to the Central empowered committee (CEC), during a meeting held at New Delhi yesterday. The meeting called by the CEC was attended by state mines secretary G. Srinivas, director of mines Deepak Mohanty and principal chief conservator of forests (PCCF) J D Sharma.

According to sources the report includes status on lease period, renewal of the mining leases, consent to operate, mining plan, forest and environment plan as well as status of working and non-working mines.

A four member team of the CEC is scheduled to visit some of the Iron ore & Manganese mines from 12 Jul, 2014. The team will verify the allegations pertaining to violation of Rule 37 of Mineral Concession Rules (MCR) -1960 during their field visit. The CEC team will be taking up field visits to the Joda & Koira mining areas on 13 & 14 Jul, 2014 and will discuss with the state government officials on 15 Jul, 2014. After the visit the CEC is expected to submit its final report on the illegal mining in Odisha to the Supreme Court.
