South Korea: Govt shuts down oldest coal-fired power plants

South Korea has permanently closed down two of its oldest coal-fired power plants in line with the country’s aim to reduce reliance on coal-based power generation. The government is planning to further close down 10 ageing coal-fired plants by May’22. Coal-fired power generation currently accounts for about 40% of South Korea’s power mix.
