India, which is world’s 3rd largest Coal importing country, imports here have climbed by 5.5% in May, 2014 from the year before. Rise in imports have resulted in view of increased demand in power sector with steep fall in imported Coal prices.
Total Coal imports stood at 19.1 MnT in May’14 which is up by 5.5% against last year, while it is 6.7% higher compared to last month. Rising thermal Coal demand coupled with low prices offered are the major reason behind surging imports.
Out of the total coal imported, nearly 80% caters to the need of India’s power generation with share of consumption continuously rising, despite shortage of fuel locally.
Major concern for the country at this time is to increase Coal inventory as the monsoons are ahead.
Indonesia, Australia, South Africa, Mozambique and China were the major suppliers of Coal at the end of month. India has shipped in a total of 14.7 MnT power-generating thermal Coal, 3.9 MnT steelmaking Coal and 0.35 MnT processed Coking Coal in May’14. Total monthly imports also included 0.04 MnT of Anthracite imported from Russia.
