China, the world’s largest coal consumer, has seen a significant recovery in coal production in Nov’21 after having seen an acute shortage of the raw material in Sept-Oct’21 following the global crunch.
As per a report by Lange Steel, China Energy Investment Corporation, the state-owned coal mining and energy company, has effectively responded to new challenges in production and operation, ensuring coal sustained domestic supply.
Coal production at historic highs
The company clocked record-high coal production from its captive mines in November. Sales volumes also touched the highest levels so far.
In Nov’21, the company’s coal production from captive mines reached 51.2 million tonnes (mn t), surpassing its previous record by 946,000 t. The monthly coal sales were recorded at 64 mn t, an increase of 4.2 mn t compared to Nov’20.
Efficiency in railway transportation
China Energy’s subsidiary, Shuohuang Railway, strengthened its rail operations from upstream to downstream to become the second largest ‘west to east’ coal transport network in China. The company’s railways transported 30.2 mn t of coal with an average daily volume of 1 mn t, setting a new record of the highest single day coal transportation volume.
All of its rail units are focused on increasing supply and achieving new breakthroughs in operational efficiency. The integrated coal loading system completed 30.5 mn t in November with an average of 1 mn t per day, an increase of 11,000 t over the previous daily record.
Multi-party linkages between ports
Its two ports, Huanghua and Tianjin, have strengthened coordination and communication with maritime departments and optimised loading and unloading operations. The port’s efficiency level has repeatedly set historical records.
Huanghua Port completed 18.8 mn t of coal shipments in November, an increase of 4.3% y-o-y. The coal loading and unloading volume reached the highest level in this month.
Increased power generation
The company’s monthly power generation capacity increased by 7.9% y-o-y and annual power generation capacity crossed one trillion kilowatt hours for the first time in history.
All the power generation units are focused on overcoming problems caused by cold waves, heavy rains, typhoons, repeated epidemics and other adverse factors.
The company has an installed power generation capacity of 257 gigawatt (GW), accounting for 11.7% of the total capacity in the country. Its annual power generation capacity is 190 GW per year with over 600 MW units, accounting for 63.3% of the national coal fleet, 35 GW units with ultra-supercritical units, accounting for 59% of the national coal fleet.
