A total of 1.7 million tonnes (mn t) of South African thermal coal are slated to arrive via several vessels at Indian ports between 1-31 Dec’21, CoalMint’s vessel line-up data reveals. This is a 200% rise against the vessel arrivals seen in the same period last month.
The sharp rise in vessel arrivals is happening amid a 32% m-o-m correction in RB1 (6000 NAR) prices to $142/t in November. Several importers which had delayed bookings rushed to bring in vessels as freight rates also fell sharply by $10/t during the month.
In the above-mentioned period, a total volume of 0.57 mn t of thermal coal, booked by Adani Enterprise, is set to arrive at Dhamra, Gangavaram, and Krishnapatnam ports followed by a combined vessel of JSPL, Maithan and Shri Balaji with 0.16 mn t which will arrive at Vizag Port.
Other-origin volumes decline
Thermal coal shipments from other origin, however, are witnessing a m-o-m decline.
Amid tight supply in Indonesia due to heavy rains, shipments are set to decline by 7% m-o-m to 1.42 mnt by Dec-end. The highest quantity of 0.34 mn t is set to arrive for Adani Enterprise at Dahej, Dhamra, Gangavaram, Hazira, and Navlakhi ports.
Shipments from Australia to Indian ports are also set to witness a 39% m-o-m decline to 0.33 mn t till end-Dec’21 with the highest quantity of 0.15 mn t booked by Aditya Birla.

A total volume of 3.99 mn t of thermal coal are is scheduled to arrive from various source countries — Indonesia, South Africa, Australia, USA and China — at Indian ports by 31 Dec’21, CoalMint’s data showed.
Gangavaram to take in highest shipments

The highest volume of 0.44 mn t of thermal coal is set to arrive at Gangavaram Port from South Africa (0.25 mn t), Indonesia (0.08 mn t) and Mozambique (0.11 mn t).
Kandla Port is the next highest receiver of thermal coal in the period under consideration with a total volume of 0.42 mn t coming in from all the major coal importing destinations. The port is set to receive 0.17 mn t of thermal coal from South Africa, 0.05 mn t from Indonesia, and 0.20 mn t from USA.
Vizag Port is set to receive a combined 0.40 mn t from Indonesia and South Africa, while Krishnapatnam is set to receive a total of 0.16 mn t from South Africa.
