Thermal coal stocks at Indian ports dip 3% to 12.5 mn t

Thermal coal stocks at various ports fell marginally by 3% w-o-w to 12.5 million tonnes (mn t) during week 46 (7-11 Nov’21), CoalMint’s stock data reveals. The fall came against  the backdrop of weakened trading activity at ports over the last few weeks and lower number of vessel arrivals.

Amid declining global thermal coal prices, portside trading activity in imported coal has taken a backseat. Majority of the coal end-user plants have largely kept to the sidelines in anticipation of a further fall in prices, before making any major booking.

Several importers, on the other hand, have also delayed their procurement plans from the international market amid lower demand at home.

Vessels carrying a total of 1.2 mn t of thermal coal made their way to the country from 8-11 Nov’21, down 14% m-o-m.

During week 46, thermal coal stock at Kandla Port was recorded at 1.6 mn t, down 8% w-o-w amid the reduction in inventory of Agarwal Coal, Friends Impex, India Coke and Power, etc.

Coal stock of Gangavaram were at 1.5 mn t, down 3% due to the 17% w-o-w decline of inventory of BSP, Indian Coke, and Swiss Singapore. A sharp fall, however, was limited due to an 11% w-o-w, 0.83 mn t inventory addition of Adani Enterprise .

Coal stocks at Vizag Port were recorded the highest this week at 2 mn t, up 8% w-o-w due to the rise in inventory of various importers.

Gangavram and Mundra Port anchored the highest quantity of thermal coal stock of Adani Enterprise at 0.83 mn t and 0.40 mn t, respectively.

Stock of Adani Power are at Hazira (0.72 mn t), Dahej (0.57 mn t), and Mundra ports (0.12 mn t).
