India: Odisha iron ore production down 31% m-o-m in Sept’21 amid seasonal factors

Odisha, India’s largest iron ore producing state, recorded production of this key steel-making raw material at 7.4 million tonnes (mn t) in Sept’21, down by 31% m-o-m against 10.7 mn t in Aug’21, according to provisional data from the Odisha government maintained with SteelMint. The figures include fines, lumps and concentrate. The production continued to decline for the month due to seasonal factors, including a heavy monsoon this year.

The same slipped by 9% y-o-y as compared to 8.07 mn t in Sept’20.

Highlights

  • JSW Steel remained the leading producer of iron ore in the state at 1.89 mn t in Sept’21 as against 2.56 mn t in Aug’21.
  • Tata Steel stood the second-highest producer at 1.17 mn t for September.\
  • OMC, the state-owned miner, recorded a 57% fall in production to 0.92 mn t for Sept’21 as against 2.12 mnt in Aug’21 which could have been the outcome of subdued responses received in its past auctions.
  • Rungta Mines’ output stood at 0.59 mn t for the month, down against 1.17 mn t in Aug’21.
  • Production of iron ore from AM/NS increased to 0.57 mn t in Sept’21, as compared to 0.52 mn t in Aug’21. In early Sept’21, the company commenced operations at the Ghoraburhani-Sagasahi (Sagasahi) iron ore block in Odisha. The mine has an EC limit of 7.16 mn t/year
