India’s total Coking Coal import stood at around 39.5 MnT, which grew over 10% from previous year. Out of total imports, 28% has contributed by SAIL and rest 28.4 MnT was imported by JSW Steel, Tata Steels, RINL and others.
As per sources, SAIL has booked Coking Coal at around USD 122-125/MT CFR India for Q1 FY15 delivery.
SAIL is expanding its hot metal production capacities by almost 63% and accordingly its Coking Coal requirement will increase by 40% to 21 MnT in next 2 years. Recently, SAIL’s chairman Mr. C.S Verma mentioned that the company’s capacity will be increased to 19 MnT by end of Sep’14 as West Bengal based Burnpur Steel plant will start operation with new blast furnace.
As SAIL is largely depended on imported Coal, it will also rise consequently. SAIL is also developing Jharkhand based Tasra & Sitanala Coal block to minimize raw material cost to some extent.
Upcoming Captive Coal Blocks
- Tasra Coal Block (Jharkhand); Production capacity 4 MnT pa of ROM (2 MnT pa washed Coal)
- Sitanala Coal Block; Production capacity of 0.30 MnT pa of ROM (0.20 MnT pa washed Coal)
