China takes measures to increase coal supplies and avert power crisis

In an attempt to ensure sufficient coal supply at power plants in China this winter, the National Development and Reform Commission has asked coal mines to increase production under safety protocol.

As per a notification by China’s top economic planner, 153 coal mines in the country have been allowed to increase their production capacity by 220 mn t per year following strict safety assessment.

The production capacity is yet to be released, while the increase in coal production and supply is expected to meet the robust power demand this winter, the notification said.

The relevant coal mines in the country have been producing coal according to the approved production capacity, and the output also can be increased by more than 50 mn t in the Oct-Dec’21 quarter, it added.

38 construction coal mines with safe production conditions will also be included in the emergency coal mines, allowing the release of production capacity in stages, with a total production capacity of 100 mn t per year.

Moreover, handle land use procedures for more than 60 coal mines has been approved to ensure the stable release of production capacity of more than 150 mn t per year, while eligible coal mines with temporary suspension of production also has been promoted to accelerate the restoration of coal market supply.

Amid the ongoing efforts to boost production, China’s daily coal output has exceeded 11.5 mn t recently, an increase of more than 1.50 mn t against the output recorded in mid-September.

The average daily output of Shanxi, Shaanxi, and Mongolia was 8.60 mn t, hitting the highest since the start of the year, according to National Bureau of Statistics.
