Iran: Finished steel exports up 88% in Mar-Aug’21

According to recent data released by the Iranian Steel Producers Association (ISPA), finished steel exports in the first five months of the current Persian year (Mar-Aug’21) stood at 1.4 million tonnes (mn t), registering a noticeable rise of 88% compared to the same period last year.

Export of long and flat products in this period was recorded at 1.1 mn t and 0.3 mn t, up by 83% and 114%, respectively.

The export volumes of billets and blooms in the first five months of this Persian Year stood at 2.50 mn t, up by 16% compared to the corresponding period last year (CPLY).

The volumes of slab exports were registered at 1.29 mn t in Mar-Aug’21, a huge growth of 128% as against the same period last year.

Iran’s steel exports, after getting impacted by the global coronavirus outbreak as well as restrictions on overseas sales, increased this year with the facilitation of steel export regulations. However, restrictions on electricity consumption and widespread blackouts resulted in a decrease in the growth rate of the country’s steel exports in Mar-Aug’21 as against the rate in the first four months of this Persian Year (Mar-Jul’21).

The losses caused by power outages for steel mills (only those falling under the Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organisation) may reach $235 million per week, Iran’s Deputy Minister of Industry, Saeed Zarandi, estimated.
