India: Mill scale export shipments drop 20% m-o-m in Aug’21

Mill scale export shipments from India decreased by 20% m-o-m to 39,450 t in Aug’21 compared to 49,500 t in Jul’21, according to the vessel line-up data maintained with SteelMint.

However, mill scale export shipments in the Jan-Aug’21 period increased more than three-times y-o-y to 226,500 t against 65,000 t recorded in the corresponding period last year, according to data maintained with SteelMint.

SteelMint has observed that this fiscal (over April-August), mill scale exports shipments have been high and deals of around 206,500 t were concluded compared to only 26,500 t seen in the same period last year.

Vietnam turns top importer in Aug: Vietnam, one of the largest importers of Indian mill scale shipments, bought around 22,750 t last month, followed by Malaysia at 16,700 t.

Kandla accounts for entire share in shipments: Kandla Port accounted for the entire volume of Indian mill scale export shipments in Aug’21. In the last five months all exports from India to South-East Asia were handled by Kandla Port, at around 206,500 t.

Domestic mill scale prices:

  • Current domestic mill scale prices have dropped on declining iron ore and pellet prices last week amid limited buying, SteelMint learnt from sources. Domestic mill scale prices were assessed at INR 6,800-7,100/t DAP Kandla on 11 Sept’21.
  • However, average prices, DAP Kandla, in Aug’21 were down by around 10% to INR 8,160/t against INR 9,100/t in July’21.
