Alang has witnessed 8-9% rise in shipbreaking imports in Aug’21 in comparison with the 45%, m-o-m, reduction in Jul’21. The total volume of ships beached at Alang port in Aug’21 was 90,588 LDT (16 ships) against 83,313 LDT (15 ships) in Jul’21. At present, 144 ships have been beached at Alang for demolition till 5 Sept’21 from 1 Jan’21. IF route capacity expansion in Gujarat is supporting melting scrap demand in the local market. However, Pakistan and Bangladesh have surpassed India in terms of prices, due to which several vessels have been diverted to neighbouring Bangladesh, which could disturb the demand-supply chain in the Indian market.
