China: Power utilities looking to import coal for winter restocking

Despite the government’s efforts to boost supply, Chinese utilities have suffered a severe coal supply crunch this year and have started restocking for winter to avoid the recurrence of further coal shortage. Amongst various power utilities, Huaneng Group has issued a tender for more than 0.7 mn t of thermal coal for imports for Sept-Oct delivery on expectation of persisting domestic supply tightness in the coming couple of months, as per latest reports. This indicates that imported coal prices are set to go higher in the coming days.
