As part of the first phase of its expansion project, Indonesian steel producer PT Dexin Steel has started a new coke oven at its integrated facility at Morowali Industrial Park in Sulawesi, Indonesia. PT Dexin Steel is a joint venture between China’s Delong and Tsingshan Holding Group, Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park and Hanwa.
Bao Jianhua, Director of Delong Group and Executive President of DXN Group, attended the inauguration ceremony of the new coke oven. The steelmaker has a combined capacity of 3.5 mn t – including 1.5 mn t of reserve capacity – which integrates coking, sintering, ironmaking, steelmaking and steel rolling. The main products are bars, wire rods and steel billets.
The Morowali project has a newly-built raw material yard supporting 3.5 mn t of steelmaking, a 2×230m2 sintering machine, a 3×600 tonnes per day (tpd) lime kiln, a 2×65 hole 5.5m tamping coke oven and a 2×120 t converter. Dexin’s re-bar and wire rod capacities are at 1 mn t/year and 500,000 t/year, respectively.
Dexin Steel Indonesia commissioned second blast furnace at Morowali
On 3 Feb’21, PT Dexin Steel Indonesia fired up its second of two 1,780 cu m blast furnaces at Morowali Industrial Park, Central Sulawesi, which was initially targeted to launch in May 2020 but was pushed back due to the coronavirus pandemic.
With the second blast furnace now being operational, PT Dexin has an overall crude steel production capacity of 3.5 mn t/year, feeding re-rolling lines for rebar and wire rod with capacities of 1 mn t/year and 500,000 t/year, respectively.
With the new furnace online, the steelmaker boasts production of products such as slab, billet, rebar, and wire rod.
Boosting capacity
Apart from the 2×1 780m3 blast furnace that was fired in Mar’20, Dexin ignited another 1,780 cu m blast furnace in Feb’21. A third BF, now under construction, is scheduled to begin operations in December 2022. The steelmaker targets to start operations in the third BF in Dec’22, which when completed, will enhance its total output capacity to 6 mn t/year.
