Portside prices of South African RB2 (5500 NAR) coal have been assessed at INR 9,250/t ex-Mangalore, as demand from sponge iron units in the southern ports picked up by INR 450/t w-o-w. Low availability of domestic coal in and around the southern belt has compelled sponge iron units in that region to procure imported coal at higher prices. Furthermore, depleting coal stocks and the absence of new vessel arrivals at Mangalore port are supporting the rise in prices.
