Taking a major step towards green iron-making, South Korean steel producer POSCO is partnering with Australian iron ore miner, Roy Hill, to conduct joint research to set up an optimal system for manufacturing hot briquetted iron (HBI) with POSCO’s hydrogen-based steelmaking technology. In the short-term, the two firms will produce hydrogen using Australia’s abundant supply of natural gases. Roy Hill supplies POSCO with 16 mn t of iron ore each year out of the 60 mn t it produces in Western Australia’s Pilbara. POSCO has a 12.5% stake in Roy Hill.
