Navlakhi port alleged violation of environmental norms has led around 7 Lakh Metric tons of imported Indonesian coal stuck at Navlakhi port-Gujarat, as instructed by closure notice from Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB). 7 lakh imported coal belongs to power plants located in Gujarat, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan and same is stuck at port from 10th May’13 after serving closure notice from Gujarat pollution control board, which also cannot be transported unless Gujarat pollution control board revokes its closure order.
Creating air pollution which is not complying with the environmental norms by the Navlakhi port has led to receive closure notice from GPBC, Also Navlakhi port had received warning notice by the GPCB in April to take corrective measures.
At the moment water sprinkles on coal mounds from tankers is not at all effective to meet the specified norms.
Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) is planning soon to submit an undertaking to the GPCB stating their commitment to take corrective measures and to minimize the air pollution they will install water sprinklers.
