China’s ferrous scrap consumption was recorded at 64.1 mn t in Q1 CY’21 compared with 41.5 mn t in Q1 CY’20, according to the latest figures released by the Bureau of International Recycling (BIR).

  • Scrap consumption in China rose on account of its 14th Five Year Plan objective of reducing carbon emissions from steel production.
  • The steady rise in steel scrap usage can be attributed, partly to weaker figures for Q1 of 2020 as a result of the COVID pandemic.
