The world’s biggest coal consumer, China, plans to add almost 110 mn t/year of coal production capacity in H2 CY’21 to meet rising demand, as per latest reports. China’s state planner, National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), has said that around 400 mn t of coal mining capacity is under review for government approval. Another 70 mn t of capacity is under construction. The government is striving to ensure electric supply to the coal-fired plants amid surging power consumption from industrial and residential users. In H1 of 2021, China added over 140 mn t of coal mining capacity as power consumption rose by 16% year-on-year.
