Glencore and Yancoal’s joint venture, Hunter Valley Operations, has acquired a majority stake in Newcastle Coal Shippers – a private company that invested in Port Waratah Coal Services last year. Port Waratah Coal Services owns and manages the Kooragang and Carrington coal terminals at the Port of Newcastle that has a combined capacity of 145 mn t per year. The Hunter Valley Operations produces thermal and semi-soft metallurgical coal. It produced 9.5 mn t of saleable coal in 2019. Glencore had also acquired the entire stake of BHP and Anglo American in Cerrejon coal mine in Colombia.
