China: Coal-fired capacity 49% of country’s total power capacity

According to a report from the China Electric Power Planning & Engineering Institute, the country’s coal-fired installed power capacity stood at 1,080 GW (Gigawatt), which is 49% of the country’s total power capacity of 2,200 GW. China added about 180 GW of coal-fired capacity in the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-20) and phased out 45 GW of capacity. In 2020, China’s power consumption totalled 7,500 TWh (Terawatt-hour), up by 3% despite the impact of COVID-19.
