Iran: Steel exports record 55% growth in Q1 of Islamic Year

The Iranian Steel Producers Association (ISPA) has published the country’s steel production data for the first three months of this year (21 Mar-21 Jun’21). Interestingly, steel exports by Iran have increased significantly during the first quarter of the current fiscal year compared with the corresponding period last year, as per the latest reports accessed by SteelMint.

Growth in steel exports: The Islamic Republic exported a total of 1.62 mn t of semi-finished products in Q1, up 55% year-on-year. Billet and bloom had the major share of semis exports with an aggregate of 1.06 mnt.

Slab exports stood at 563,000 t during the period, up 176% y-o-y. Exports of finished steel products jumped by 125% to 873,000 t, while rebar accounted for the largest portion of finished steel exports with 684,000 t, marking a 142% growth on the year.

HRC exports hit 57,000 t, registering a 171% growth compared with Q1 of the year before. CRC exports of 1,000 t, registered an 89% decline year-on-year. Exports of DRI increased by 1,505% on year to 321,000 t.

Steel production: According to data, the Islamic Republic’s finished steel production in the first three months of the Islamic New Year stood at 5.39 mn t of which 3.1 mn t were long products and 2.298 mn t were flat products. Production growth of long products was 16%, while that of flat products fell 3% y-o-y.

Analysts believe that if power and gas outages do not cause much disruption to the country’s steel production, Iran’s steel output this year could reach 33.6 mnt. However, power outages remain a serious obstacle to seamless steel production.

The production of hot-rolled sheets in the first three months of this year was 2.25 mnt, which shows a decrease of 2% compared to the same period last year. According to data, sponge iron production in the first three months of the Iranian new year was 8.8 mnt.
