Steel producers in Ukraine have urged the government to impose a blanket ban on scrap exports until 2023 to help the domestic steel industry, as scrap exports have surged amid a sharp price rise. The existing export duty of Euro 58/t is not enough to put a brake on exports, steelmakers said, adding that increasing exports could lead to a 500,000 t shortage for local producers in CY’21, resulting in a 9.5% fall in the country’s steel production. Ukraine increased steel output by 7.5% in H1 CY’21 to 10.86 mn t.
