Odisha Iron Ore production up 15% in FY’14- Provisional Data

Iron Ore production up by 15% in Odisha in FY’14. According to a provisional data released by Ministry of Mines, India produced about 142 MnT in FY’14.

Bhubaneswar:  Odisha iron ore production touched 72 million tonnes(MnT) in the financial year 2013-14, an increase of over 15% against the previous financial year, according to a provisional data released by Odisha government. In 2012-13 Odisha’s total iron ore output was around 62.3 MnT and in 2011-12 the production was 66MnT.

According to the data, production has increased significantly from Serajuddin mines (due to extended Environmental Clearance), Rungta Mines, AMTC and KJS Ahluwalia. Production has come down from R.P. Sao mines, which were closed due to issue with forest clearance and Essel Mining.

Rungta mines remained as the largest miner with a production of 12 MnT followed by Tata Steel at about 10 MnT, Serajuddin at 8 MnT and Sarda Mines at about 7 MnT.

According to the data Odisha produced 72 MnT of iron ore in 2013-14 and total dispatch was 76 MnT. Though the steel making mineral production has increased the state’s royalty income has dropped to INR 5510 crore against the target of INR 6600 crore. Drop in mineral royalty is due to fall in sale prices of iron ore in the international and domestic prices.

Though iron ore production has increased in 2013-14, the current financial year 2014-15 may witness drop in production if the Supreme Court imposes ban on mining in the state. Some experts believe that the court may order ban on mining at the mines that are running under deemed renewal. As per the CEC report there are 40 such mines that are running under deemed renewal in the state.
