Global thermal coal prices surged in Jun’21 as the Australian 5,500 NAR averaged $74/tonne (t) in Jun’21, up 28% m-o-m. The South African RB2 (5,500 NAR) grade averaged $89/t in Jun’21 (up 5%), and Indonesian 5,500 GAR rose by 13% to average around $92/t. Increased Chinese and north east Asian countries’ appetite for imported thermal coal amid hot weather conditions, China’s reduced domestic coal supply amid increased safety inspections drove up thermal coal prices globally.
