China is attempting to increase use of steel scrap by 23% to 320 mn t by 2025, along with increasing the production of recycled non-ferrous metals, in an effort to ensure supplies and to meet the country’s climate commitment, as per reports. The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) is also seeking to raise the substitution rate of renewable resources to primary resources and to increase utilization of low-grade iron ore and tailings. China’s steel scrap usage was around 260 mn t in 2020, the state planner said on 7 Jul’21.
