Primetals Technologies, part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, has announced the successful commencement of operations at its hydrogen-based fine-ore reduction (HYFOR) pilot plant at Voestalpine’s steelworks in Austria. The use of 100% hydrogen as a reduction agent minimises the carbon footprint and makes use of a process capable of reducing iron ore fines, with particle sizes smaller than 0.15 mm. The process can use low-grade iron ore to extract iron for high-quality steel. The HYFOR plant will be operational for the next two years during which sustained testing and evaluation will take place, as per reports.
