Vietnam: Coal imports decline by 4% in May’21

Vietnam’s coal imports, comprising both thermal and coking coal, fell by 3.5% m-o-m and 46% y-o-y to 3.8 mn t in May’21, as per customs data. Imports from Australia were recorded at 1.58 mn t, followed by Indonesia at 1.43 mn t and Russia at 0.41 mn t. During Jan-May’21, Vietnam’s coal imports were at 16.43 mn t, down 33% y-o-y. The power sector happens to be the biggest consumer of thermal coal in Vietnam.
