In FY21, India’s total pellet production capacity is reported at 93 million tonnes (mn t). Out of the total capacity, captive production capacity accounts for 30 mn t and merchant production capacity is at 35.7 mn t. Under captive production, 16.5 mn t is produced by blast-furnace -route and 13.5 mn t by sponge iron-route.
However, 13.7 mn t of merchant production is exported and only around 22 mn t is used for domestic consumption.
