According to recent data released by General Administration of Customs, China’s steel imports registered a decline of 6% y-o-y to 1.2 mn t in May ’21. However, in the Jan-May ’21 period steel imports stood at 6 mn t, up 11% y-o-y. China’s government seeks to facilitate imports of semi-finished steel to feed domestic demand as it steps up production control measures to cut pollution and carbon emissions.
