India: NMDC’s total iron ore rake movements dip 2% m-o-m in May’21

Government-owned miner NMDC’s total iron ore rake movements from Chhattisgarh were recorded at 377 in May’21, against 386 in Apr’21. The figures include movements to Chhattisgarh as well as other state-based units but excludes AM/NS India’s movement through slurry pipelines.

Supplies to Chhattisgarh-based units improve by month-end: NMDC’s iron ore rake movements to Chhattisgarh-based mines were recorded at 57 in May’21 compared to 53 a month ago, as per the data maintained with SteelMint. The miner was facing limited working shifts amid increased Covid-19 cases. Hence, the dispatches and production were on the lower side earlier in May, SteelMint notes.

Supplies to other state-based units fall in May’21: NMDC’s iron ore rake movements to other state-based units were recorded at 320 in May’21 compared to 333 in Apr’21. RINL recorded 180 rakes in May’21 against 207 in Apr’21. Majority of the mills had cut down production in May as liquid oxygen supplies were diverted for medical purposes. Hence, there was a slightly lower demand for ore.

Chowgule and Company Private Limited’s procurement from NMDC was recorded at three rakes in May’21 as against seven a month ago. The Chowgule Group’s Mandovi pellet plant of 1.8 mn t per annum (mntpa) capacity restarted full-fledged operations from end-Apr’21.
Rashmi Metaliks Ltd procured two rakes from NMDC in May’21. Amidst higher Odisha iron ore prices and tighter merchant availability, the company had participated in NMDC’s auctions.

Movement for exports continue to remain nil: NMDC’s long-term iron ore export contracts with Japanese steel mills (JSMs) and South Korea’s POSCO, which were to be renewed on 31 Mar’21, have been delayed. As a result, its export rakes movements from its Chhattisgarh mines, collated on a monthly basis, show nil since Apr’21.
