India: JSW Steel’s Vijayanagar plant achieves 97% of hot metal target in Apr

JSW Steel’s flagship Vijayanagar plant’s total hot metal production in the month of Apr’21 was at around 0.94 million tonnes (mn t) against the targeted 0.97 mn t, indicating a 97% achievement.

Overall, steel mills have been busy prioritising on oxygen diversion over steel production for saving Covid-infected lives. JSW Steel too has been supplying liquid medical oxygen (LMO) from its manufacturing facilities in Karnataka, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu to states across India. The company is supplying 1,000 tons per day of LMO from end-April.

Overall, mills have been experiencing a dip in demand too with localised lockdowns implemented across states.

Pellets, WRs and TMT

Pellets production from the company’s new plant at Vijayangar works was at 2.28 lakh tonnes against 26,460 tonnes in March. It may be mentioned, production from this unit started in March itself.

Wire rod production in April was at around 82,360 tonnes against 96,820 tonnes in March. TMT output in April remained flat at 1.08 lakh tonnes, the same as seen in March.

Iron ore sourcing from its captive mines in the previous month dropped to 4.42 lakh tonnes, against 5.67 lakh tonnes seen in March, possibly due to the Covid scenario.

Sales

The steel major’s total sales from the Vijayanagar plant for the month under review were at around 0.86 mn t against a targeted 0.91 mn t, showing an almost 95% target achievement. Its March sales were higher at 1 mn t against a sales plan of 1.02 mn t. The target achievement was 98%.

Wire rod sales in April were at 83,300 tonnes with exports at 48,000 tonnes and domestic at 35,300 tonnes. In March, sales of wire rods were higher at 1.03 lakh tonnes (export at 59,850 tonnes and domestic, at 42,660 tonnes).

TMT sales for the month under review were at 1.09 lakh tonnes (exports at 29,400 tonnes and domestic, at 79,800 tonnes). March sales of TMT were also higher at 1.12 lakh tonnes (exports at 24,600 tonnes and domestic, at 88,180 tonnes).

The steel major has set a May sales target of around 0.95 lakh tonnes from its Vijayanagar works.
