Indian iron ore movement down by 26% in FY’21

Iron ore movement (excluding exports) across major producing states of the country was recorded at 107.17 mn t in FY’21, down by 26% y-o-y, as against 144.37 mn t in FY’20. The figures are compiled on the basis of movements made via railways, trucks, Karnataka and import data as per customs. The figures exclude the captive iron ore movement of JSW (Gonua & Narayanposhi), SAIL, Tata Steel and movement for exports. The figure includes movements from JSW Steel (Jajang & Nuagaon), AMNS and Sarda Mines.

State-wise iron ore movement analysis:

Odisha iron ore dispatches down by 40% in FY’21: Odisha- India’s largest iron ore producing state recorded merchant iron ore dispatches at 53.25 mn t in FY’21, down by 40% against 89.08 mn t in FY’20. The figures exclude movements for export and dispatches from captive mines- SAIL, JSW (Gonua &Narayanposhi) & Tata Steel and include dispatches from Sarda Mines, JSW Steel (Jajang & Nuagaon) & AM/NS, India movements.

The decline in dispatches was primarily due to pandemic apart from the delay in the resumption of dispatches at auctioned mining leases due to statutory clearances, transport-related issues, pricing concerns, etc.

Karnataka iron ore e-auction sales fell marginally: Karnataka has registered a decrease in yearly sales e-auction volumes in FY’21. Total iron ore allotted quantity in FY’21 was recorded at 29.2 mn t compared to 30.04 mn t in FY’20.JSW purchased around 15.9 mn t of iron ore from Karnataka e-auctions against 18.08 mn t in FY’20. JSW purchases fell because it has started sourcing iron ore from its captive mines.

Dispatches from Chhattisgarh increased by 8% in FY’21: Iron ore dispatches from Chhattisgarh were recorded at 21.79 mn t in FY’21, up by 8% against 20.14 mn t in FY’20.
Indian iron ore imports fell significantly in FY’21: Iron ore imports to India for the month of FY’21 were recorded 0.38 mn t as against 1.2 mn t in FY’20. The pellet imports stood at 0.05 mn t as against 0.34 mn t a year ago. Preference for domestic ore & pellets, costlier imports kept imports to India limited.

Indian iron ore export volumes up 85% in FY’21: Indian iron ore and pellet export shipments were recorded at 46.4 mn t in FY’21, up by 85% against 25.14 mn t in FY’20.Higher global prices, liquidation of stocks by Odisha miners and tighter availability of ore in the global market boosted exports from India.
