India: Domestic pet coke sales down 33% in FY21 till Feb’21

The total domestic sales of petroleum coke in India for the period Apr’20-Feb’21 has shown a huge decline of 33.0%. However, the decline in Feb’21 is comparatively lower at 18.4% due to a gradual increase in domestic sales in the last few months.

Notably, the above domestic sales data includes all types of Petroleum Coke including both Fuel Grade and Anode Grade Petroleum Coke (LS) as well as Calcined Petroleum Coke. Generally, Fuel Grade Petroleum Coke produced domestically by various oil companies has high sulphur ranging from 6% to 8%. Anode Grade Petroleum Coke has lower Sulphur ranging from 0.6% to 2.5%, which is produced at select refineries of IndianOil (IOCL) and Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL).

The above-mentioned domestic sales data is further analyzed state-wise for Apr’20-Feb’21 as compared to Apr’19-Feb’20.

It is noted that pet coke sales at Rajasthan continues to be the highest. It is mainly due to the concentration of various cement factories by different companies like UltraTech, ACC, Ambuja Cement, Shree Cement, JK Cement, JK Lakshmi Cement, Mangalam Cement, Wonder Cement etc, who are the major consumers of pet coke. However, it has registered a reduction of 35.9%. Maximum negative growth is registered at Gujarat at (-) 42.2%.

The next states in order of ranks of higher quantity are Gujarat, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka.

A graphical representation has been made showing the percentage share of domestic pet coke sales in the major states during the period Apr’20-Feb’21 vs Apr’19-Feb’20. Notably Rajasthan contributed about 17.2% in the current year against 18.0% of last year. Other major states Gujarat, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka contributed about 13.4%, 13.4%, 11.3% and 8.3% respectively. These top five States contributed about 58% of domestic sales of pet coke against 62% during same period last year.
