Coastal Energen (CEPL), a Chennai based power manufacturer has started its first unit (600 MW) of 1,200 MW located in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu.
CEPL has ignited the boiler of 600 MW in last Tuesday and expecting another unit to be operational in next 4-5 months.

The above plant is based on the sub critical Pulverized Coal fired boiler technology and will be requiring around 5-5.5 MnT of 3,600-3,800 GAR Kcal/kg grade Coal per annum. Thermal power plant will be operating on 100% imported Indonesian Coal. It was heard earlier that the company was talking to get supply of Coal from Adaro, however not confirmed from the officials.
Company has also planned for second phase and will move forward for developing another 1,600 MW (2X800 MW).
INR 70 billion Coastal Energen’s power project has also power supply agreement with TANGEDCO with rate of INR 4.91 per unit.
CEPL is promoted by Coal & Oil Group for the development of 1,200 MW imported Coal based thermal power plant at Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu. The Coal & Oil Group is a Dubai based energy conglomerate and have presence in Coal trading, technical consultancy for fuel sourcing, handling, shipping, logistics etc.
During FY14, the group has imported around 10 MnT of Coal from different countries in India and during FY15 the company targeted to import around 15 MnT of Coal in India. Company has long terms and short term supply agreements with major suppliers like Adaro, BHP Billiton, Xtrata & Anglo American.
