India: NMDC’s iron ore rake movement from Chhattisgarh falls marginally in Feb’21

  • Movement from Chhattisgarh to state-based steel units stood at 75 rakes
  • Movement for exports decreased by 44%
  • Dispatches to RINL down by 7% for the month

NMDC has supplied a total of 458 rakes (1.76 mn t) of iron ore from its Chhattisgarh mines in the month of Feb’21, as against 481 rakes (1.85 mn t) a month before, according to railway movement data maintained with SteelMint.

NMDC’s iron ore rake movement from its Chhattisgarh mines to state-based steel units stood at 75 rakes (0.29 mn t) in Feb’21 compared to 84 rakes (0.32 mn t) a month ago, as per railway movement data maintained with SteelMint. Raipur-based steel mills preferred booking NMDC ore over domestic pellets, due to cost-effectiveness. C-DRI prices rose to INR 28,000/t exw Raipur towards the end Feb’21 as compared to price levels of INR 24,000/t seen in early Feb’21.

NMDC had reduced iron ore prices for Feb’21 on the back of a decline in semi-finished prices seen in Jan’21. The prices of Baila lump and fines reduced by INR 600/t ($8) and that of DR-CLO by INR 700/t ($10). The miner slashed prices after a gap of nine months.

NMDC’s supplies to outside state-based units up marginally in Feb’21: The procurement by outside Chhattisgarh-based units picked slightly in Feb’21 to 361 rakes (about 1.38 mn t), against 358 rakes a month ago.

RINL’s total iron ore procurement dropped 7% to 179 rakes for the month as against 192 rakes a month ago. Sources had reported to SteelMint that owing to subdued steel offtake the company had set a lower liquid steel output for Feb’21 vis a vis 5.49 lakh tonnes in Jan’21.

JSW Steel, Dolvi’s procurement from NMDC increased 17% to 74 rakes as compared to 63 rakes in Jan’21. Gujarat-based Mono Steel procured two rakes from NMDC CG in Feb’21, against 5 rakes in Jan’21.

Movement for exports decreased by 44% to 22 rakes in Feb’21 against 39 rakes in Jan’21.
