Rio Tinto lifts iron ore shipment guidance for CY’21 Rio Tinto recorded iron ore shipments at 330.6 mn t for CY’20, up by 1% y-o-y. The company has set Pilbara iron ore shipment guidance at 325-340 mn t for CY’21.
The total iron ore production marked 2% increase to 333.4 mn t in CY’20. IOC iron ore pellet & concentrate production in CY’20 was recorded at 10.4 mn t, down compared to 10.5 mn t in CY19. The production drop is attributed to unplanned maintenance at the processing facilities in the third and fourth quarter.
Vale fell short of iron ore production target in CY’20 Vale’s total iron ore fines production in CY’20 was at 300.4 mn t, down marginally against 301.9 mn t in CY’19. The S11D ramp up, resumption at Vargem Grande and Timbopeba was offset by constraints in tailings disposal in Itabira and Brucutu, COVID impacts, delays in opening new mining fronts in Serra Norte and four months stoppage at Fazendao site.
The total pellet output recorded at 29.7 mn t in CY’20 was down 29% y-o-y as a result of lower pellet feed from Vale’s sites. Vale ended CY ’20 with 322 mn t of production capacity and expects to achieve 350 mn t capacity by the end of CY’21.
Vale achieved record sales to China in Q4 CY’20, at 64 mn t as compared to 58 mn t in Q4 CY’19.
BHP Group’s iron ore output up 5% in H2 CY’20 The production for H2 CY’20 from Western Australia iron ore operations was recorded at 144.6 mn t. The output picked up by 5% against H2 CY’19 at 137.3 mn t. Fig mentioned is on 100% basis. BHP Group FY’21 iron ore production guidance from Western Australia (100% basis) remains intact at 276-286 mn t for the fiscal year. The target includes production from Samarco plant.

FMG’s iron ore shipment up 5% in Q4 CY’20 Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) – iron ore shipment in Q4 CY’20 was recorded at 46.4 mn t, as against 44.3 mn t in Q3 CY’20 The total mined ore for the fourth quarter (Q4 CY’20) dropped to 50 mn t, down 14% q-o-q as compared to 58.4 mn t in Q3 CY’20. The quarter also saw a significant development as mining commenced at its Eliwana mine which is located in the Western hub of Pilbara. This milestone was achieved in Dec’20.
FMG FY’21 (July 20-June’21) shipment guidance remains intact at 175-180 mn t.
Anglo American iron ore production down 19% in Q4 CY20 The miner’s iron ore output from Kumba mines decreased by 19% to 9.6 mn t in Q4 CY’20 as compared with 11.8 mn t in Q4 CY’19. The decrease is attributed to high rainfall and operational issues at the Sishen crusher and Kolomela plant. Kumba’s sales volumes decreased by 3% to 10.1 mnt in Q4 CY’20 as compared to 10.5 mn t in Q4 CY’19. Entire material of 10.1 mn t for the quarter was exported.
