Iron ore movement (excluding exports) across major producing states of the country was recorded at 12.90 mn t in Dec’20, up 13% m-o-m, as against 11.37 mn t in Nov’20. The figures are compiled on the basis of movements made via railways, trucks, Karnataka and import data as per customs. The figures exclude the captive iron ore movement of JSW (Gonua & Narayanposhi), SAIL & Tata Steel and movement for exports. The figure includes movements from JSW Steel (Jajang & Nuagaon), AMNS and Sarda Mines.
State-wise iron ore movement analysis:
Dispatches from Chhattisgarh picked up 19% in Dec’20:
Iron ore dispatches from Chhattisgarh were recorded at 2.39 mn t iron ore in Dec’20, up by 19% against 2.01 mn t in Nov’20.
Odisha iron ore dispatches up 11% in Dec’20:
Odisha- India’s largest iron ore producing state recorded total merchant iron ore dispatches at 6.82 mn t in Dec’20, up 11% against 6.13 mn t in Nov’20. The figures exclude movement for export and dispatches from captive mines- SAIL, JSW (Gonua & Narayanposhi) & Tata Steel.
State govt. has been trying hard to push dispatches. In Dec’20, Odisha govt. has proposed to penalise auctioned iron ore mines for not meeting MDPA targets. The Directorate of Mines, Odisha Government, has now sought departmental approval to slap them with penalties, charged at 24% of average sale price, as published by IBM, on their monthly shortfall in dispatch, which is to be appropriated from their respective performance security.
Karnataka iron ore e-auction sales increased in Dec’20:
The total allotted quantity in Dec’20 was recorded at 3.63 mn t, registering a rise of 87% compared with 1.94 mn t in Nov’20, as per data compiled by SteelMint.
Indian iron ore imports in Dec’20:
Iron ore imports to India for the month of Dec’20 were recorded at 64,625 t as against 175,222 t in Nov’20. The import vessel was booked by AM/NS from Australia. Pellet imports stood nil for second consecutive month in Dec’20.
Indian iron ore export volumes stable on monthly basis:
Indian iron ore export shipments stood stable m-o-m at 3.91, according to vessel line up data maintained with SteelMint. However, pellet exports dropped to 0.55 mn t as against 0.76 mn t in Nov’20.
