India: Manganese ore imports surge in CY ’20

According to Customs, Indian manganese ore imports increased by 41y-o-y in CY ‘20 despite many operational cuts in the international market. Imports have increased in the last few months due to amplified production levels of silicomanganese. 

South Africa remained the largest exporter of manganese ore for India in Dec ’20 with total exports of 2,03,126 t. South Africa accounted for 48% of the total manganese ores imported by India. Gabon and Australia were the other major exporting countries for India with a share of 21% and 20% respectively. 

Majority of imports were for grades Mn 44-46% and Mn 30-35%, and the major receiving ports were Vishakhapatnam and Kolkata. Meanwhile, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town were the largest manganese exporting ore ports. 

Manganese ore prices are currently on an upswing and are at $5.40/dmtu CNF China and silicomanganese prices are now at INR 70,000/t Ex-India.
