The tenure of the Justice M.B.Shah Commission of enquiry, investigating the illegal mining cases in several states, may be extended for one more year. The extended tenure of the commission is expiring on 16th of July 2013.
The commission has already finished its investigation in mineral bearing states like Goa,Karnataka and Odisha. However, it is yet to visit other mineral bearing states like Chattishgarh, Jharkhnd and Madhya Pradesh. So the commission has written to the union mines ministry for extension of tenure.
According to sources the mines ministry is planning to submit a proposal before the union cabinet for grant of extension period for one more year. However, the cabinet will take the final decision on the matter; the commission was constituted as per the direction of the cabinet. Meanwhile, the probe panel may submit an interim report on Odisha.
The union government has constituted the Shah panel headed by Justice M.B.Shah on November 2010 for carrying out investigation into the multimillion dollar illegal mining cases in several mineral bearing states including Odisha. Initially the tenure of the commission was to expire on July 2012, but later it had been extended till 16th July 2013.
