South Africa’s total iron ore export shipments in Nov’20 witnessed 40% rise on a monthly basis to 5.25 mn t, against 3.74 mn t in Oct’20, according to bulk vessel line up data maintained with SteelMint.
On a yearly basis too, exports recorded a 7% rise against 4.91 mn t in Nov’19.
Shipments to China picked up by 85% in Nov’20 – South Africa’s total iron ore export to China for the month of Nov’20 was recorded at 3.43 mn t, up 85% as compared to 1.85 mn t in Oct’20. Exports to China increased on falling shipments from major miners of Australia and Brazil.
Netherland stood second largest at 0.65 mn t (up 17% m-o-m) followed by Korea at 0.34 mn t.

Lump shipments to India to increase in the coming month – Western and southern India based mills had booked South African lump vessels on domestic tightness with expected delivery towards Dec’20-Jan’21, SteelMint learned. However, with global iron ore prices hitting $ 151/t, CNF China yesterday (9th Dec’20), imported lump offers to India have also increased. SteelMint’s assessment for imported lump stands at around $155-160/t, CNF Kandla, up by $25-30/t m-o-m. Hike in offers have lowered inquiries for imports now, sources highlighted.
