India: CIL’s coal production up by 16% m-o-m in Oct ’20

Coal India Ltd (CIL), country’s largest coal producer, has reported production of 46.84 mn t during Oct ’20, registering a growth of 16% m-o-m from 40.51 mn t in Sep ’20.

Continuing the steady rise post COVID-19 led slowdown; the output also grew 19% y-o-y from 39.35 mn t in Oct ’19, thus helping the company to attain positive growth in cumulative production for the first time in this fiscal.

Production during Apr-Oct ’20 period saw a nominal rise of 0.9% to 282.9 mn t against 280.4 mn t in Apr-Oct ’19. Notably, CIL’s total production at the end of second quarter was lagging behind the output attained in corresponding period of previous fiscal by 12%.

Coal Dispatch:

CIL attained 50 mn t coal dispatch for the first time in this fiscal, in line with the improvement in power demand. In contrast, the company had been supplying coal in excess of 50 mn t towards the beginning of previous fiscal.

Coal dispatch increased 25% y-o-y to 50.53 mn t in Oct ’20 against 40.5 mn t in Oct ’19, also extending its growth on the monthly basis from 46.46 mn t in Sep ’20.

However, overall dispatch till October was down 3% y-o-y to 305.7 mn t compared with 316.3 mn t in the year-ago period.

Quantity in mn t

Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL) remained the largest coal producing subsidiary with an output of 11.08 mn t in Oct ’20, while its nearest competitor SECL managed production in excess of 10 mn t for the first time this year.

All the subsidiaries of CIL posted rise in production on the monthly basis, while the coal producing unit in Assam-NECL has failed to resume production post temporary suspension announced since Jun ’20.
