India, the world’s third largest Coal importing country has registered a slight decline in Coal import in the month of January and imported around 13.6 MnT of Coal.
India has imported around 13.6 MnT of Coal during the period of Jan’14 which declined by 5.7% against 14.4 MnT Coal imported in Dec’13. India’s Non-coking Coal import comprises 73%, Coking Coal comprises 23.5% and other (Coke/Anthracite) made up the rest of its total imports during Jan’14.

In Jan’14, India imported 8.2 MnT Coal from Indonesia and registered a jump of 26% against the prior month.
The second biggest supplier was Australia, supplying around 3.4 MnT that’s a jump of 25% compare to previous month. South Africa was ranked third as India imported around 0.82 MnT of Coal from South Africa; declined by 49% from 1.5 MnT of Dec’13 import.
SteelMint assessed that Mundra port has imported highest quantity i.e around 2 MnT in Jan’14 which was increased by 27% against Dec’13 import.
Gangavaram port on the East coast of India was the second highest quantity port, imported around 1.2 MnT of Coal.
Now, India has become the world’s third largest consumer of Coal because of increased demand from power stations and steelmakers.
SteelMint assessed that Adani Enterprises, JSW Steels and Essar Steels are the major importers of Coal importing around 1.5 MnT, 1 MnT and 0.7 MnT respectively. Adani Enterprises has imported the maximum quantity from Indonesia, Australia, South Africa & USA which has increased by 22.5% compare to previous month. Total imported quantity was Non-coking Coal.
Indian steel giants, SAIL & Tata Steels have imported around 1 MnT & 0.5 MnT of Coal respectively in Jan’14. Import of SAIL has declined by 6.3% compare to last month in January.
