India: Shipping Ministry notifies DG Shipping as National Ship Recycling Authority

The Union Ministry of Shipping has notified the Director General of Shipping as the National Authority of Recycling of Ships under the Recycling of Ships Act, 2019. As per media reports, the new Authority will be set up in Gandhinagar, near Alang in Gujarat – Asia’s largest ship-breaking yard. India currently recycles 70 lakh t of ships/pa. It is looking to double ship recycling activities post implementation of the recycling act.
