India: Railway freight loading up by 15% in Sep’20 signaling economic recovery

The freight loading by the Indian Railways has increased by 15% y-o-y in Sep’20. It has crossed a mark of 100 mn t loading in Sept’20 giving an indication of revival of the Indian economy, according to recent media reports.

Railway Board CEO and Chairman Mr. V K Yadav said, “In the month of Sep’20 we have crossed 100 mn t loading”, the Indian railway earned around INR 9,897 cr from the freight loading which is higher by 13.5% y-o-y.

Almost all commodities have shown positive growth in Sept’20. Cumulative freight loading for coal, iron & steel and raw material for steel was recorded at 63.6 mn t in Sep’20 up by 12% y-o-y. These 3 commodities accounted for 62% of total freight loading in Sep’20.

  • Coal– Railway’s coal freight loading was recorded at 42.89 mn t in Sep’20 up 6% as against 40.5 mn t in Aug’20 and increase by 9% y-o-y.
  • Raw material for steel (Including Iron ore) recorded 9% rise on a monthly basis in freight loading to 15.77 mn t in Sep’20.

The Indian Railways loaded 533 mn t during H1 FY’21, down by 9% as against 586 mn t during the CPLY.

Outlook – The Indian Railways is working on the National Rail Plan 2030 and according to the assessment based on preliminary studies, railways freight loading is expected to increase to 2,400 mn t by 2024, and by 2030 it is expected to touch 3,200 mn t.
