Europe’s largest iron ore miner LKAB has produced successful trials using fossil-free fuels at its pellet plant in Sweden as part of the Hydrogen Breakthrough Ironmaking Technology (HYBRIT) initiative for which LKAB has partnered with Swedish steel-maker SSAB and German electricity major Vattenfall in a bid to produce carbon-neutral steel by 2045. LKAB’s green pellets are a result of fundamental changes in heating technology.
