Mining in Odisha

Odisha:Mineral Production drops, but Revenue Rises till December

Bhubaneswar:  Odisha’s mining revenue increased only 3.8% in the Apr-Dec period of the current financial year to INR 3,894 crore from INR 3,803 Crore in the same period of the previous financial year. During this period (Apr-Dec) mineral dispatch has increased to 40.6 MnT while the amount was about 36.8 MnT in the same period of the previous fiscal, according to the state Steel & Mines Department.

Meanwhile, mineral production of the state has dropped in these 9 months against the same 9 months of last year. Till December, 2013 the mineral production has dropped to about 40.1 MnT , whereas it was about 43 MnT in the same period last year, thereby registered a drop of 6.7%.

According to experts, the drop in production and rise in dispatch was due to stringent and regular supervision of mineral production and dispatch minerals. Currently, there are only 31 Iron ore, 12 Manganese and 20 Iron ore-manganese mines operating. Many mines are in non-working state, mainly due to the want of statutory clearances from Central Government Departments. It has been resolved to promote more and more utilization of Lumps and Fines inside the State, said Gudey Srinivas, Commissioner-cum-Secretary Steel & Mines during a review meeting chaired by the Chief Secretary J.K.Mohapatra.
